Dealing with haters is something that everyone running a business online, will eventually have to do.
It is not a matter of if you will get haters, it is a matter of when!
No-one actually wants people to ‘hate’ on what they are doing, and it can be quite a shock when it happens, but it is how you deal with it, that will make all the difference as to how you move forward as a person, and in your business.
In this article I am going to give you some effective advice to help you deal with haters, and how to weather the storms of negativity.
Just in case YOU are a hater, I would just like to say, Welcome to my Blog, and BITE ME!!
To the rest of you Superstars, please, read on!
Dealing With Haters
Firstly, what is a hater?
A hater is a bottom feeding, ultra negative, loser, who can’t come to terms with the fact that they can’t do what you’re doing.
They take great delight in running everyone down, ever so courageously, from their anonymity behind their computer screens. (I think most of them live in their parent’s basement, but I don’t have any stats to back this up, so probably best you don’t quote me!)
It seems to be their mission to attack anyone who is actually out there, having a go at bettering themselves in some way.
If you are a sensitive person, and it’s OK if you are, haters can have a real impact on how you feel about yourself, and what you are doing. They can make you feel like quitting, and they can make you feel disinclined to keep putting yourself out there. DO NOT let them get to you.
The good news is, haters only seem to want to attack successful people. People who are working to achieve something significant, wanting to change their lives and circumstances, and people who are having a serious go of things in the ‘public eye’. ie, on the internet, and especially social media.
If you already have haters, I want you to jump up and down, and do your ‘Happy Dance’, because you are obviously making a significant impact, and your success is driving the haters crazy. Be overjoyed by this!
Haters do not just limit their special brand of poison to people who are trying to run businesses on the internet. They will attack, the bigger ‘players’ who run social media accounts, Facebook Fan Pages/Groups, and they will also target individuals.
For example, if you are someone who is trying to lose a significant amount of weight, and you’re posting before and after pics of your journey, you could have experienced haters posting comments.
You are a champion for what you have set out to achieve, you are extremely brave, and I would recommend posting more pics, rather than less. Use the hater’s negative energy to drive you in a positive way. Keep doing what you’re doing, and keep achieving your goals until it is impossible for the haters to criticise you in any way. By the way, You’re looking Amazing!
Types Of Haters
Haters come in many forms, but the two main categories I would place them in are, Silent, and Vocal.
These are the ones who may have gotten to you the most, because they are ‘visible’, and ‘in your face’. They are the keyboard warriors, and they want to shout their message to you, with more volume than your Grandad’s T.V.!
They are looking for a response, and they are the ones who are the most threatened by what you do.
It is best just to Block and Delete them, rather than engaging with them. They are not big scary monsters, they are more akin to a mosquito buzzing around in your bedroom when you’re trying to get to sleep. Just use the bug spray, and don’t pay them any more attention.
If you run a blog, or have an online presence where people can post comments, just delete their comments. It’s really not a big deal, and it will save you a lot of wasted energy that could have been put into something much better.
This group of people are harder to identify, because they are silent, and invisible.
They won’t let their opinions be known to you, but they will have no problem talking about you behind your back, and secretly hiding in the shadows, waiting for you to fail.
Sadly, these people are often your family, and friends. They are not necessarily being malicious by what they are doing, but they are threatened by the fact that you are trying to do something that they know they should also be doing, or they know they couldn’t actually do what you’re doing.
You may have put a post on social media about your business, and it will get no interaction. No Likes, No Comments, Nothing! It is like your post is laced with the Ebola Virus, and everyone has run for cover.
You could then post a picture of a dog wearing a hat, and your post will get Likes, Comments, and Shares like there’s no tomorrow.
Did no-one see your business post? Nope, they saw it, they just don’t want to acknowledge anything about this side of your life.
It can be really disheartening to know that the people closest to you are responding like this, and as hard as it is, it is not personal. It is about them, not you. Just keep doing what you’re doing, and don’t care what anyone is thinking.
Dealing with haters should not be something that you dread, and it should also not be something that you hope you are not going to have to deal with.
As I said at the start of this article, haters target successful people, they target winners, and they target people who are really trying their best.
In a sad, kind of twisted way, haters can be an indication that what you are doing is working. Just ignore them, and keep going no matter what.
Take some advice from my good friend Taylor, and just Shake It Off, Shake It Off!!
