Network Marketing is a very unique industry, but when it comes to the truth about Network Marketing, it can sometimes be difficult to separate reality from the myths.
If you are considering joining a Network Marketing company, this article will tell you the absolute truth about the industry, and if you are already in a Network Marketing company, I hope that this article will inspire you to promote this amazing industry in an honest, and positive way.
I am going to present you with the good and the bad about Network Marketing, but most of all I am going to present you with an honest overview.
Network Marketing – ‘The Bad’
The first half of this article will be focused on ‘the bad side’ of Network Marketing, some of these problems come from Network Marketers themselves, and some of them are due to misconceptions of the industry.
Too many lies are told by Network Marketers
Network Marketers wanting to recruit a new prospect, often over simplify a Network Marketing Business to the point that it sets the new recruit/prospect up for failure. I don’t think that this is done maliciously, but ultimately it helps no-one.
The type of lies I’m talking about are things like; A Network Marketing business involves little to no work. You can make a huge income without even trying. The products virtually sell themselves. A Network Marketing business is easy.
The truth is, a Network Marketing business is A Business, and as such, it requires a lot of work, hard work.
This is something that should not be hidden from someone who is looking at joining a Network Marketing company. It’s OK that it’s hard work. If it was easy, what would be the challenge in it? Who wants ‘easy’?
Personally, I want to work hard, and push myself to achieve because it adds meaning to what I’m doing, and there is a much greater sense of achievement when you have successfully done something that was tough.
Tell people, “yes, it is hard work, but the rewards that can be achieved really make it worth it. Just don’t lie to them.
False Income Claims
You cannot produce a huge income in Network Marketing without even trying. You only have to join an MLM facebook group to see this type of lie being perpetuated. You will see people posting things like, “Make $2000/week, No Selling, No Recruiting” And yet, here they are selling their opportunity, and trying to recruit everyone.
The income generated in Network Marketing is generally, directly proportionate to the time, effort, and energy put in to achieve it. Money does not fall out of the sky, you won’t get rich overnight, and you can’t just sit around doing nothing and expect to see the cash roll in. It just doesn’t happen.
Income comes from consistent effort, and continual development of an individual’s skills, and it comes over time. The harder you work, the faster you will see results.
There are many lies that get told to people, and it is this dishonesty that really hurts the industry. If you are already a Network Marketer, commit to being honest, and tell people the truth. It is OK to tell the truth, and over time, it will change how people perceive us.
As Ray Higdon says, people don’t have a problem with Network MarketING, they have a problem with Network MarketERS.
Raise the professionalism, be proud of this industry, and tell people the truth, if we don’t make a concerted effort to do this, we will only have ourselves to blame.
Its a Scam/Pyramid Scheme
Network Marketing is a legitimate industry, and a legitimate business. The entire industry is overseen by the Federal Trade Commission, (The FTC) and they watch every company like a hawk.
People think that Network Marketing companies are Pyramid schemes because of the structure of the compensation plans, and how teams are built.
This is very inaccurate. For something to be considered a pyramid scheme, there is no tangible product, or the entire system is predicated purely on recruiting new members without a retail component being in place.
The FTC is constantly investigating Network Marketing companies, and following up on complaints about them.
Network Marketing companies have been completely shut down over the last couple of years because they were deemed to be pyramid schemes. The main reason for this was, the companies involved were only focused on recruiting distributors, and not customers.
If you’re looking at joining a Network Marketing company, make sure there is a strong emphasise on building retail customers.
Network Marketing is definitely not a scam, and this accusation is often levelled at Network Marketing from disgruntled people who did not make a success of their business after only being in Network Marketing for a short period of time. This is often a common attitude adopted by people who want a reason to not join an MLM business.
You have to harass your family and friends
I have been in several Network Marketing companies over the years, and I have NEVER harassed my family and friends. I have not tried to prospect them, and I have not put them in any position that would make them feel uncomfortable.
I have told my family and friends what I do, and what the products are. That’s it. No selling to them, and No Recruiting.
Friends and family members have become product users in the past, but that was a decision they made on their own.
The vast majority of the people that I have prospected have been complete strangers.
I am very aware that when you join a Network Marketing company, they will tell you to prospect everyone you know. If you are comfortable doing this, knock yourself out, but it is not a critical requirement to make a business work. Do what sits well with you.
It’s not a real business
This is absolute nonsense. Many people have built enormous empires within the Network Marketing industry. They have also helped, and trained many other people to do the same thing.
There is a lot of ignorance about the Network Marketing industry, and I understand how people outside the industry perceive it, but there is no basis to this belief.
If you are looking into Network Marketing, do your research, speak to people who know what they’re talking about, and make a decision based on education rather than the opinions of people who are not qualified to advise you.
It’s only the people at the top who make any money
This is another myth that is utterly not true. Everyone in a Network Marketing company has the potential to make an income that can be way beyond anything they have earned previously in a job or business. This is regardless of what position they have come into their MLM company.
Many people have gone on to make a far more successful business than the person that recruited them, and this person may have been positioned a long way above them.
Money can be made at all levels, and as discussed earlier, it is dependant on the amount of effort applied by an individual.
Network Marketing – ‘The Good’
Despite the negative connotations that some people have about the Network Marketing industry, there really are so many positive aspects to it.
Inexpensive start-up cost
This is a major positive point of MLM companies. Because the entry price is so low, it makes it affordable for anyone to join, and start their own business.
As well as the low start-up cost, the overheads are also very inexpensive. People have created enormous businesses just by using their mobile phone, and social media.
Because the entry price is so affordable, the risk involved with these businesses is very low.
The industry is All inclusive
I went to a company event a while ago, and one thing I noticed was the diversity in the people who were there. Everyone is welcome, and no-one is discriminated against for religious beliefs, cultural background, disabilities, or even past criminal records.
Everyone is given a fresh start, and they are not judged on where they have come from, which is something that would cause major hurdles for them if they were trying to get traditional employment.
I believe that due to the all inclusive nature of the industry, it promotes tolerance, and decreases ignorance, which is a really positive thing, and something that should be encouraged.
It gives you freedom
I believe everyone joins a Network Marketing business in order to attain freedom.
People will say their reason is, for travel, money, giving to charity, spending more time with their children and families, having more flexibility with their time etc, but all of these things ultimately mean Freedom.
You can run your business from wherever you like, and whenever you like. This is a major benefit for single parents, or for people who are full time employed, and are running a Network Marketing business part time.
Networking Marketing can give you more freedom than you ever thought possible. The harder you work, the more freedom you will have.
It develops you as a person
To be successful in Network Marketing, you must develop personally. You need to develop your skills in marketing, sales, public speaking, relationship building, connecting with people, and business skills.
The more you work on these skills, the more you will improve and develop as a person. Your relationships will improve, you will be more positive on a consistent basis, and your enjoyment of life will increase.
Personal development, I believe is one of the key factors to your future success, in all aspects of your life.
Invest in yourself, and this investment will become evident in your business.
You get faster results than in a traditional job
Due to the systems in place in Network Marketing companies, these systems can be utilised to accelerate your progress.
Presentation videos are already created for you, sales and marketing training is already in place, and there is a support network that can help you progress more quickly.
Income is essentially fixed in a traditional job, whereas network marketing has no limit on what you can earn. If you apply yourself, work hard and consistently, you can create an income that can set you up for life, and it can be done in just a few years.
When looking at the truth about Network Marketing, I honestly believe that the good aspects outweigh the bad. Of course, Network Marketing will always have it’s critics, and that’s OK, people are entitled to their opinions.
If you are looking at joining a Network Marketing company, I would highly encourage you to do so. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.
If you have been a Network Marketer for a while now, I sincerely hope that you commit to promoting this industry in the best way possible in the future. This will benefit everyone in the industry in the long run.
The truth about Network Marketing will ultimately be dependant on how Network Marketers conduct themselves, and how honestly and positively they promote the industry.
Matt Morris said, “Our Truth Is Good Enough!” This is something that all Network Marketers should embrace.
Be honest, raise the level of professionalism, represent yourself and the industry in a positive way, and work to change the negative perception of this amazing industry.
