Everyone has a past. For some it may have been good, and for others it may have been horrific. Whatever your past has been like, if you are not getting where you want to be in life, and in business, you Must stop allowing your past to hold you back.
~Most people don’t have business problems, they have personal problems that spill over into their business~Unknown
In this article, I am going to share some examples of how people have overcome their pasts, help you identify what it is exactly that is holding you back, and show you how to stop allowing your past to hold you back.
Stop allowing your past to hold you back
The main reason I was driven to write this article, is because for almost a decade, MY past held me back. Not just in business, but in every single aspect of my life.
I suffered a severe back injury as a Paramedic, and subsequently, this injury ended my career. I had lost my job, my income, my identity, and my self worth, and within several years, I had lost everything else, money, relationships, evicted from my home, and any job I managed to find, I was soon fired from.
How did this all happen?
It took me many years to realise this, and even longer to actually admit it to myself, but the answer is, I let it happen! It was me. I have no-one else to blame, and as illogical as this may seem, I allowed my entire life to collapse because I was hanging on to my past for dear life.
My past was the ‘Cloak of Misery’ that I wore every day. I felt so sorry for myself for what had happened to me, and I desperately wanted everyone else to feel sorry for me as well. No-one cared. Well. that’s probably not true, I’m sure people did care, but I was so wrapped up in my own misery that I didn’t notice.
For almost a decade I used what had happened to me as the reason why things were no longer working out for me. I always had an excuse for why I couldn’t move forward, or why I couldn’t be successful, or why I couldn’t turn my life around. Life sucked, I was miserable, and I have no doubt that I was the most negative person to be around.
So, how did things turn around?
I had bought an audio course on success from Ray Higdon, and in this course he spoke about his past, how bad things had become for him, and how horrible his life had become after losing everything in the Global Financial Crisis.
Ray said that he hit such a low point that he finally said, “Enough Is Enough! I am NO LONGER going to allow myself to be this person anymore.”
It was this comment that made me realise that this was the answer for my problems too. I HAD to stop being the same guy that I had been, and the only way to do that was to let go of my past, and that’s what I did.
Matt Morris’ Story
Matt Morris is a top earner in his Network Marketing company, and earns several million dollars per year. He is relaxed, happy, and seems to be the most stress free person you could ever meet.
It would be fair to assume that Matt doesn’t have too many things in his past that could have held him back in his life, and his business. To make millions of dollars a year he must have had a dream run through life, and he must have not been through any adversity.
Well, nothing could be further from the truth.
Matt’s father was an alcoholic, and when Matt was four years old, his parents separated. His mother then met another man, and they started a relationship. One night, Matt’s father broke into their house, and murdered his Mum’s boyfriend in front of him!
Matt’s father subsequently went to prison, and when Matt was 13 years old, his father committed suicide.
After the murder of her boyfriend, Matt’s mother worked three jobs, and put herself through law school, and later became a judge!
In the video below, Matt talks about his life in a very informal interview with Grant Cardone. www.grantcardone.com
(The entire interview goes for about half an hour, and if you are involved in Network Marketing, it is worth watching the whole thing. If you want to skip to the part were Matt talks about his past, skip forward to about the 8:00 min mark.)

So, why is it that Matt Morris was able to move forward, and become so successful, in spite of his past being so traumatic?
He looks at his past, and he says, “it’s just a story.” That’s it, nothing more.
Your past is just a story. You survived every horrendous bad day, every horrible experience, everything you wish never happened to you. You did it, you survived! Be proud of what you have managed to endure.
I am not trivialising anything that has happened to you in your past, and I am not dismissing how those events must have made you feel. What you must do to move forward, is to keep telling yourself, “It’s just a story.”
Your life is made up of so many stories, and you will continue to add more and more stories to it along the way, but HOW you allow these stories to affect you, will determine what type of life you will have in the future.
I can tell you from personal experience, if you don’t stop allowing your past to hold you back, it will Own you forever!
Stop allowing your past experiences to rob you of your life. If you limit yourself, and your life because of what someone else did to you, they continue to win. They are still controlling your life, years, maybe even decades later. Stop allowing people or circumstances from your past to have Any control over you. Stop limiting your life by believing that your past somehow controls your future.
You control your future, your decisions, your actions, and your thoughts, not your past, so stop allowing your past to hold you back.
If you continue to live in the past, and if you continue to relive past experiences over and over, your future will never be any different. Stop allowing your past to hold you back, and commit to living in the present, your future self will be very grateful you did.
