Twitter is a social networking platform that is used by millions of people, with thousands more signing up every day. With such a vast amount of people to potentially get your message to, this is a platform that you should be using if you are serious about generating leads for your business.
Rules of Twitter
The lead generation strategy that I am about to outline, ethically uses a combination of following, and unfollowing. Please be aware that Twitter has it’s own rules regarding following limits per day, and you need to stay within these limits, or you run the risk of having your account shutdown.
Finding people to follow
To effectively generate leads on Twitter, you need followers, and the fastest way to do this is to follow other people. The more followers you have, the more ‘eyes’ you’ll have on your promotions.
To find people to follow on your mobile device, type a keyword into the search function that matches your target audience for your products or business.
When you have typed your keyword, hit ‘search’, and you will be shown some Twitter accounts that match your search. Don’t click on these. Go to the top search bar, and tap on the two lines next to your search word. This will allow you to refine your results, and in the menu that comes up, tap on ‘people’. You will then be given a list of people that match your search word(s).
Choose one of the accounts, to make sure it is an active account. (You are looking for recent activity). You then want to go into this account’s ‘Followers’, and then you can just go down the list and follow as many of these people as you like.
Repeat this process for different keywords, to give you more variety, and to allow you to target people who may match the different demographics and interests you are looking for. You will have more chance of getting ‘follow backs’ from the recent followers on these accounts. This process can be repeated up to 1000 people a day.
After you have followed people, give them 24 – 48 hours to follow you back before you unfollow them. Over time your list of followers will increase dramatically.
Crowdfire is a really handy app that helps you to quickly follow, and unfollow people on Twitter, and Instagram. The app also shows who is not following you back, and who you are not following back.
The free version of the app allows you to follow and unfollow 100 people a day. (200 total). If you want to unlock more functionality of the app, you can pay a small fee (about $5 USD/Year) to allow you to do a lot more.
This app will save you a lot of time, and it will give you instant access to the information you will need regarding your followers.
In the menu section of Crowdfire, at the bottom, is a menu option called ‘automate’, this option will allow you to set up a welcome message that is automatically sent out when someone follows you, which is a great way to personalise your account.
I recommend resisting the urge to add a link to your welcome message, it is unprofessional, and screams desperation. I won’t open a link from anyone who has not established a relationship with me first.
Content ideas for Twitter posts
- Inspirational quotes
- Links to your landing pages
- Links to Blog posts
- Links to Youtube videos (You can also upload 30 sec videos directly to Twitter)
- Links to your Instagram posts
Make your posts as varied as possible, as this gives people more to interact with, and just posting links and advertising all over your Twitter account will just cause people to unfollow you.
Adding Hashtags to Tweets
When adding text to your tweet, add the ‘#’ symbol, and type a single letter in, this will bring up a list of the highest trending hashtags. You can then go through the list and choose one that suits your post, and then repeat the process for the next letter of the alphabet, and so on until you have used your maximum amount of characters.
Engagement is key
Focus on your notifications, and messages, as these are people who are actively making the effort to interact with you. A lot of messages may be spam, and unwanted links, but check your messsages regularly and respond to the people who have reached out to you.
Turn followers into leads
The more people following you, the more people you have as potential leads. Tweets can be used to drive traffic to your blog, landing pages, your facebook Fan Page, Youtube channel, ‘One Time’ offers etc. Keep providing value to your Twitter following, and you will have no shortage of targeted leads coming in to your business.
Twitter is an often under-utilised platform, and it is one that is not used correctly. By implementing this very simple strategy, you can generate an unlimited amount of leads for your business, and you should see a considerable increase in the interaction of your followers, which will hopefully lead to sales and sign-ups for your business.
